Episode 119: The Journey to The Longest Autumn

Avery (now Amy) and D.C. discuss writing multiple timelines or flashbacks in a story. We chat about some possible best practices, finding the right reader for a multi-timeline story, and some of our favorite (and least favorite) examples.

(Side note: This episode was originally recorded in October of 2023 but Amy just now got around to editing it, so the “what we’re reading and working on” sections are a glimpse into Past Us)

Drink Pairing: Autumnal Cocktail

  • 2oz apple cider (the good cloudy stuff that’s only squished apples)
  • 2oz pumpkin spice syrup (I used Real brand, but you can make your own using the recipe below)
  • 1.5oz rye whiskey
  • .5oz whipped cream vodka
  • 1 dash angostura bitters
  1. Combine all with 1 cup ice in blender and blend well
For Pumpkin Spice Syrup:
  • Equal parts pumpkin puree, sugar, and water
  • Pumpkin Spice powder to taste
  1. Heat puree, sugar, and water over low-medium heat until sugar melts and it all mixes well together
  2. Add pumpkin spice to taste
  3. Remove from heat and let cool
  4. If you’re ok with it being thicker, just pour into a bottle or jar. If you want to remove some of the solids, you can pour through a coffee filter (pour-over coffee makers with cone filters work great for this) but it will take a while to strain out and you may need to do it in batches depending on how much syrup you make.

Mocktail:

  • 2oz apple cider
  • 1.5oz pumpkin spice syrup
  • 1.5oz ginger beer (or ginger ale if you want a milder ginger flavor)
  1. Shake cider and syrup together in cocktail shaker with ice until well chilled
(you can also stir well with ice in a mixing glass or tall glass, but the shaker will get it colder which helps cut the sweetness)
  2. Pour into collins glass over ice
  3. Top with ginger beer, give a small stir
